California Vacations YosemiteYosemite National Park is the third most visited national park in the USA, with annual visitor numbers of approximately 4 million, and is one of the "crown jewels" of the US National Park System. The park is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains in central east California and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travel time from Los Angeles is approximately 6 hours. Yosemite's history dates from 1864 when the politicians of the day created history by being the first to ever set aside scenic lands for protection and to allow for future enjoyment by all people. Yosemite is recognized the world over for the spectacular scenery and a magical environment. The sheer granite cliffs, groves of giant sequoia, waterfalls, clear streams and local wildlife make this a truly special place. Spread over 750,000-acres, Yosemite contains thousands of lakes and ponds and 1600 miles of streams. Exploring the park is made easy with 800 miles of hiking trails and 350 miles of roads. Yosemite has over 300 species of vertebrates, with black bears being one of the most common and best known for their conflicts with humans in the park. In recent years, better visitor education and improved bear management efforts have reduced the bear-human incidents to almost nil. |

The park covers an extremely large area, far more than can be seen in just a one or two day visit. In fact over 90% of visitors only see about 1% of the park. The peak season is usually spring when the waterfalls in the Valley are flowing at their strongest, and summer when all the roads are open and visitors can access the higher reaches for views of the Valley from above.
