California Vacations Southern California

Southern California is the region that extends south from Los Angeles to the border with Mexico and east across the desert country to Nevada. San Diego is the major city of Southern California. This bustling metropolis of 1.3 million people is indelibly linked to Sea World, one of California's major tourist attractions, as well as Legoland.

These popular theme parks, along with the world class San Diego zoo, ensures that the city is always near the top of Californian family vacation destinations.

With over 70 miles of surrounding beaches, San Diego has an outdoor lifestyle with water sports being at the top of the list for most people. San Diego is a port city and numerous vacation cruises depart from here to ports in Mexico and further afield to South America.

The city is a favored destination for sailing and is the home port of the US navy's Pacific Fleet. A popular choice with immigrants, the city has become a melting pot of ethnic neighborhoods filled with different cultures and lifestyles.

Thirty miles to the north of downtown San Diego is Carlsbad, a lovely beach town and home to Legoland. To the south is Chula Vista, the largest city of the South Bay region which is a popular residential area. The city is just a few miles north of the Mexican border post at Tijuana.

Travel east from San Diego and the landscape quickly turns to the harsh desert country of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in California. Park visitors will find 500 miles of dirt roads, twelve wilderness areas and many miles of hiking trails. The park is home to the Californian bighorn sheep, just one of the wildlife species that live here.
