California Vacations Sea WorldSeaWorld San Diego is an oceanarium, marine mammal park and entertainment theme park all rolled into one on an area of 189 acres on the shores of Mission Bay. SeaWorld first opened to the public in 1964 and was an instant hit, attracting over 400,000 visitors is the first year of operation. In recent years, approximately 6 million people per year visit the park. The SeaWorld of today is firmly etched into the minds of most people as the premier park for marine mammal displays and the Killer whales (Orcas) take center stage. Shows usually run for 20-25 minutes and plan on arriving at the arena early to be sure of good seats. Shamu was the park's original killer whale and today all performances feature "Shamu" although the original has been replaced by six other whales that all have individual names. There a five species of dolphins in the park and dolphin performances are always a hit with audiences. Displays of Pacific walrus, Beluga whales, Polar bears and penguins make up the remainder of the inhabitants and a walk-through aquarium allows visitors to get up close and personal with a huge range of sharks, turtles and any number of ocean creatures. |
