California Vacations Disneyland

See Park Locality Map

Located in Anaheim, approximately 40 miles to the south of central Los Angeles, Disneyland, or Disneyland Resort to use the correct name, is actually two separate theme parks. Disneyland Resort also has three hotels and a shopping and entertainment precinct.

The original Disneyland Park, dating from 1955, has a universal theme of family fun, entertainment and imagination. It is a favorite with visitors from all over the world. It's sister park is Disney California Adventure which opened in 2001, and is a celebration of California's history and culture. Each park requires its' own entry ticket.

The rides in Disneyland Park are generally "sedate" and suited to all ages with just a couple of thrill rides. California Adventure has fewer attractions and the rides are more thrill-oriented with a few family-style rides.

The Disneyland parks attract approximately 16 million people each  year so full-house crowds are to be expected on summer weekends and winter holidays. Long queues are common at the most popular attractions, so visitors need to allow adequate time for their visit. Off-season queues in late winter or early spring can be short, especially on weekdays.

The parks are renowned for their friendly and helpful on-site staff, the attention to detail throughout and the exceptional standards of cleanliness that are maintained despite the size of the crowds.

Tickets are priced at different levels with the base ticket being a Single-Day Theme Park Ticket which allows admission to only one of the two parks. However, the Park Hopper allows entry to both parks, and between parks, on the same day. The Park Hopper tickets are also available for multi-day visits, and while the ticket price increases with each extra day, the price per day becomes cheaper.

Another way to enjoy some significant savings is to buy a Southern California CityPass which includes a 3-day Park Hopper ticket for Disney plus one day each at Universal Studios Hollywood, SeaWorld San Diego and your choice of either the San Diego Zoo or the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

"I think what I want Disneyland to be most of all is a happy place, a place where adults and children can experience together some of the wonders of life, of adventure, and feel better because of it." -- Walt Disney

Disneyland, the original Disney theme park, still has many of the original, favorite attractions. The Disneyland of today boasts 57 attractions, the most number of attractions of any Disney theme park. The attractions are incorporated into "lands" which are are:

  • Main Street, USA. - modeled on Walt Disney's childhood town of Marceline, Missouri

  • Fantasyland - modeled on a Bavarian village

  • New Orleans Square - modeled on 18th Century New Orleans

  • Mickey's Toontown - modeled on the cartoon town in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

  • Frontierland - modeled on the old west

  • Critter Country - modeled on North American forests

  • Tomorrowland - modeled on science fiction visions of the future

Disney California Adventure is Disneyland's sister park that opened to the public in 2001. The park has seen a steady growth in visitor numbers and has nearly doubled its attendance since opening. It is now in the top ten of the most visited theme parks in the U.S. The park is divided into five California themed "lands" which are:

  • Sunshine Plaza - modeled on a California postcard

  • Golden State - divided into five predominant Californian districts

  • Paradise Pier - modeled on California's 20th Century boardwalks

  • Hollywood Pictures Backlot - modeled on Hollywood's studio backlots

  • "A Bug's Land" - modeled on the movie "A Bug's Life"
